best cost/function h-bridge ic

What is a good H bridge IC that can be used in a multitude of different projects. i currently use the l293d but it's expensive for how many i use. any suggestions?

It does depend on the current draw of the Motor.
The TB6612 ( board sold by Pololu) is inexpensive and works well with small motors. It is a Dual H-bridge for two motors.

What about the other H-bridge chip Pololu sells:

Many seem to be cheap.

The L293d costs $4.12 on digikey. The SN754410 is pin compatible and costs $2.33 and it can provide more current.
