Please Help!!!! L297&l298n
« on: August 01, 2011, 06:21:31 AM »
Hi everybody.
I have problem with wiring L297 - L298n. I did everything as in datasheet but i didn't get anything but a burning smell.
Can someone please tell me what did i do wrong?
I am trying to control bi-polar stepper motor by sending pulses from parallel port to L297
Where do i need to connect  reset , enable , Vref , Control , SYNC and Home ?
Half/full step and CW/CCW depends what i want ; 0 or 5.
I need to send pulses to Clock from parallel port ( 3-3,5 volts )
Am i right?
Instead of 36 volts i am using 24 volts.
I have 4 wired stepper motor and how can i connect them to L298n?
I know the couples but which one of them is A or B???
Thanks

Hi,

Can you please tell me why you expect others to know how exactly you F's up, when you don't provide the least bit of "evidence".
Like a drawing of how you connected it and please don't just say you did it like in the datasheet, as you clearly didn't. Draw the schematic without looking in the datasheet - just what you soldered together.
And it is common courtesy to provide links to datasheets and other relevant material.

Precisely as the datasheets says and they're all described in detail, so go read the datasheet.

Half/full step and CW/CCW depends what i want ; 0 or 5.
Either "0"/"1" or 0V/5V. Just saying "0 or 5" doesn't make sense.

Yes.

Am i right?
Is it working?

Instead of 36 volts i am using 24 volts.
That's not a problem.

Exactly as in the datasheet (which you already claimed that you did)

I know the couples but which one of them is A or B???
The one you grab first is A, or flip a coin.
It doesn't matter, they're arbitrary names and should the motor end up running CW when it should run CCW and v.v., swap the connections of one of the coils.

- If you cooked your chips, there's a real chance that they are permanently dead.
- Don't assemble a circuit before you understand the datasheets of the components involved,00 at least enough to avoid burning your components.
- Use Google. We can help when you meet a hurdle, but don't expect us to spoon-feed you every little thing that you should have searched for yourself - There are tonnes of projects using those two chips on the net.

I check the the motor and it needs 6.4 ohm so i need Vref 3.2 volt ; from datasheet.
I build it again but this time without L298n and and i put 4 leds to the output of the L297.
First i put them between every pin and ground ; but only 2 of them worked , also i changed the CW to high but the same and when i send pulses to clock they went off.
Then i put pair for each output ; one pair between 4 and 6 numbered pin but opposite directions ; same same....
Why can it be?

Ps:
CW/CCW , half/full step , enable and Vref are connected to 5 volt
Control to ground
Reset , Sync , Home , INH1 and INH2 to nothing.
I sent pulses to Clock.

First i want to check L297 all alone.

I am reading the datasheet again and please check me if i am right.

I am going to wire the diagram but without L298n ; everything which suppose to connect to L298n will be connected to nothing as INH1 and INH2. Sync and home also to nothing.

Gnd directly and Sense1 - Sense2 with res. to ground.

Enable , control , Vs , Half/Full ( for half step ) and reset to +5 volts

Vref to 3 volts or something else....

Now 2 things remains.

CW/CCW : Doesn't matter high or low for now

Clock : Pulse

Now the thing is ; when we say pulse i thought it was "0 to "5 but is it opposite? I mean is it has to be connected to 5 volts than suddenly cutting it off ? Is this pulse ? Cutting the voltage?

Finally i want to wire 4 leds between  A ,B ,C ,D to ground just to be sure that L297 is working.
What do u say?

I wired only L297 but it didn't worked well....

As you can see in the pic. i wired the outpins 4,6,7 and 9 to led than to ground. Only the second and the fourth one worked than i send pulse ( i connect the pin 18 to 5 volt ) than they went off.

Sync , home , inh1 and inh2 to nothing

Gnd to ground

Sens1 and sens2 to ground by resistor ( 0,5 ohm )

A , B , C and D to the ground by leds

Enable , control , Vs , CW/CCW , Half/Full and reset to 5volt

Vref to 3 volts

OSC as in the datasheet
Please help......

Hi,

I'm not sure you understand how to use Vref?
What value is your sense resistors?

I build it again but this time without L298n and and i put 4 leds to the output of the L297.
First i put them between every pin and ground ; but only 2 of them worked , also i changed the CW to high but the same and when i send pulses to clock they went off.
Both /INH1 and /INH2 (pins 5 and 8) has to be high for all 4 outputs to get through.

Reset , Sync , Home , INH1 and INH2 to nothing.
Oops... There you have it. NEVER leave inputs floating around - they need to be tied either high or low.

If you had red the datasheet a little more careful you would have seen this:
Quote
Step clock. An active low pulse on this input advances the motor
one increment. The step occurs on the rising edge of this signal.
This means that whatever you use for clocking the L297 needs to be active low, resting at "1" level (eg. 5V) and pull to "0"-level in a pulse to clock - the actual step happens at the time when the pulse finishes and the clock signal reverts to "1" level.

Finally i want to wire 4 leds between  A ,B ,C ,D to ground just to be sure that L297 is working.

I say... Remember to add series resistors to the LED's. Anything from 220 Ohm to 470 Ohm should be usable.
