Dense Forest-Best Frequency?
« on: September 14, 2011, 05:18:18 PM »
I plan to drive an all terrain RC vehicle through dense woods. From the perspective of the radio signal, it would be similar, but not as bad, as traveling through fresh water, right (trees are mostly water)? So the lower the frequency the better (i.e. 27 mhz)?

Once I've decided on the best frequency, as much transmitter range as possible is the next question. [I'm trying to find a FPV camera system that would operate on low frequency (lower than 2.4 ghz; for the same reason) as well]

Andy advice is appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, the lower the frequency the better, but 27MHz might not be low enough, depending on the amount of forest and the transmitter ERP. (27mHz would be fine though ;))

27MHz sounds a bit low for a camera.

At 2.4GHz, with parabolic reflectors at each end, the beam will be "cigar-shaped" (i.e.fat in the middle, tapering at each end) and if just a part of the middle dips into tree tops (even if there's a clear path between transmitter and receiver parabola), the signal will be attenuated.

To find the optimum compromise between frequency and bandwidth giving the best range takes some on-site experiments, as no two forests are alike.

Andy advice is appreciated.
Too bad I'm not Andy then  :D

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
