how CCD work in IR sensor

HI,

I want to ask how CCD work in Sharp IR sensor like GP2D12?

The sharp IR sensor shoots out a concentrated (by the lens) IR-light beam

The beam hits an object, and reflects back in all directions.

As the length from the object  increases, the returning lights degree will be steeper.

How the beam that hit the CCD,translate into length(x in my figure) or into angle?


I can measure the X by the hit pf the beam?
I know the b(the length between the eye and the ccd of the sensor) so i can know with b and the x the length the object is.

The "CCD" is an array of photo receptors with a lens in front of the array, so the reflected light dot will be concentrated on a small number of the receptors, which depends on the distance to the target. The calculation, based on the brightest lit (averaged) receptor is done inside the sensor.

The location of the brightest lit receptor is importent to the sensor beacuse it's considerate with it in the Microprocessor?
