Cool joy stick for robot, but cost?
« on: January 25, 2008, 08:07:30 PM »
Hey guys, I've found this joystick at http://www.robotshop.ca/home/products/robot-parts/communication-control/rc-communications/phidgets-mini-joystick-sensor.html, but I know that most gaming controllers have the same set up and wondering if you could cut a square around it, do a little soldering, make some wires coming out and save $25?  Is it that easy, or do you have to get a chip or something?

I'm confused on what you plan to do with the joystick . . .

buy a wii nunchuck, you can communicate it with I2C or dissect it and there will be a 3 axis accelerometer and a joystick inside you can hack.

or you can get a cheap used PS1 controller and do the same thing, except the PS1 controller uses SPI.

Now thats what im talking about ;), but does it opperate just like it would if you used the whole controller?  (what i'm trying to says is, is there a chip involved any where in the schematics from the joy to microcontroller?)

I'm thinking about making my own controller for a robot that will use 4 joys altogether. (still working on design)

I don't know if PS1 controllers are analog... if so... hit 'em hard....

No... I involve no chip... It's just to trimmers and a tact switch so a ATMEGA8 would do nice with two of 'em...
And if you don't want the tact switch to be on a interrupt you could interface more!!!
I'll come with a schematic and more pictures soon!!!

Keep on b$tch$ng!!!

Cheers

Now I'm not a big fan of a joy stick that just pushes buttons and only gives out I/O signals.  :-\  That is unless I can't help it.   TrickyNeko, does your joystick still have the pots in them?
