Help with the Infrared Detector Tutorial

I've read http://www.societyofrobots.com/schematics_infraredemitdet.shtml and http://www.societyofrobots.com/sensors_color.shtml
 and I'm having some trouble understanding it all.  I'm trying to modify my 50$ bot to follow a simple curve for now and I'd like to get started

1.  Would any LED work for this circuit or do you require a specific LED?  I'd think because I'll be using a black line, all colour will be absorbed in contrast to anything else, which will reflect some wave length.  Therefore a white light would be the best?

2.  For the T1 part, can you suggest a phototransistor that'll be suitable?  I've looked on digikey and I get phototransistors that don't look like the picture at the top of the page.  They have like 3 legs and don't resemble an LED.

when I built a line follower I just used a typical led, and a pair of radioshack photoresistors (same kind as used with the $50 robot tutorial).  Make sure to shield the photoresistor from ambient light (any sources other than the led).
