do i have to modify my charger/battery pack?
« on: October 02, 2008, 09:45:55 PM »
Hi!  This is my first post here.  I have a heavy background in programming, but I'm not too farmiliar with the hardware side of things.  I have a question similar to this post:

http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=1274.0

I ordered a 6V Battery pack, 1440 mah...

http://onlybatterypacks.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=11714.7

And you'll notice it says "Connector selection available in checkout."  So I figure, I need a charger too, eh?  I pick this thing out:

http://onlybatterypacks.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=10880.12

It says it has a Kyosho male connector.  At checkout, the battery pack has an option to choose a connector, so I choose the option "KYOSHO MALE (CHARGER SIDE)".  They didn't have a kyosho female or...?...  Anyway, after looking at pictures of kyosho connectors, I reckon I'll have to cut them off and solder on something compatible with the Axon, right?  And then modify my charger as well?

Oh, and thanks for this chock-full website.

I recommend establishing a "standard" for yourself for battery connectors.  Kyosho is a good one.  Just stick with that standard connector for all your projects and make adapter cables as needed to be able to plug in other commercial units (like the Axon).  Then in the future you will be able to easily mix and match different projects and power sources.

I think most of us stick with the 'hitec' connectors also known as molex (i can't remember the exact model of molex)

my battery came with the hitec connector, and my charger came with the tamiya connector, so i just made an adapter.

I'm fairly certain that they're the same thing.  They all have to be compatible with the standard R/C battery pack.  I believe they have a 20A current rating.
