power board

hi guys, i want to make a power board,but tell me one thing that confuses me always whenever i am making any circuit .i know there should be a capacitor,resistance or what ever but i cant find which value it should ??? pls help ......
like if i am using a battery and i want to attach a capacitor but dont knw the value ......

I'll make the assumption that you know the basics here...

To make well-filtered voltage source from your battery, first run it through a diode (forward biased).  Then put 1000 uF per amp electrolytic across it.  Then follow the recommendations of your voltage regulator chip manufacturer for additional chip input and output filter capacitors.
