Batteries and fuel gauges, confused
« on: November 28, 2008, 09:21:06 AM »
Hey!

Got a few battery questions.

I want to use a Li-Ion battery in my project, and I’ve read if Li-Ion’s discharge to much they can be permanently damaged. So I see having a fuel gauge being really important to prevent this.

Are there any good fuel gauge tutorials? They freak me out a little, I just read through this:
http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS2782.pdf

Besides seeming quite complicated to just setup, batteries have different max/min voltages depending on temperature (eg half full at 30 degree’s is different to half full at 0 degrees). Do batteries data sheets have these temp specs?

Also, does anyone know where I can get a data sheet for the BP511 recharged Li-ion battery? Ive just got a charger and a few spare’s, so it would be cool to use them, but I wont risk it otherwise.

Thanks for reading!

Nick D

or you can just buy one :P

(there are others, this is an example)

Just what I was looking for, cheers.

Just reading through the specs, it seems to want a specific battery type. Is there a particular lithium battery pack you recommend to use with this. Eg: " tap connection on your battery, and it will automatically detect the number and cell order for any pack with .1” tap spacing". I'm guessing I need a battery with these specs? It also seems to need an ESC and a Throttle signal?

I have some lithium batteries and a recharger already, so it would be cool if i could modify them to work with this.

I'm pretty sure you don't need an ESC for it to work . . . however after reading the specs I'm not sure if it will work with *all* batteries as I'm not sure what the maximum input voltage and output power is allowed.

I recommend emailing them and posting what they say here :P

Just did some digging, and found this:
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2774

There are different voltages too.

Great website, lots of good battery info. Just need to work out if I can maybe use the led socket as a digital output, and plug it into a microprocessor.
