Crimping tool (again) - Hopefuly Solved
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:52:19 AM »
After crimping about 12 pins with nothing but pliers I decided I had enough. I want a crimping tool. Unfortunately I have no idea what to look for in a crimping tool to be sure it works for the kind of pins in those servo connectors. This kinds of connectors:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/electronics_wire_connector.shtml

Now to the problem. I'm in Europe so the Digikey part numbers are not useful. I'd like to get the crimping tool from Farnel but they've got hundreds of different models. How do I know if a given crimp tool can crimp those connectors? Reading the datasheets didn't help and I can't find them at an local shop so I can look at them and decided for myself if they work or not. My budget is up to 200 euro but I don't really want a state of the art tool, I'd rather spend a big part of that on something else!

Unless some of you can suggest an other crimping tool carried by Farnel, or can suggest something to look at into the datasheet to make sure it works, I'm getting this tool:
http://ro.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=3292526
but really, I'd rather not spend that amount on a crimp tool.

I can't agree more, crimping with pliers is a pain in the a**. I'm probably going to buy one from futurlec:
http://www.futurlec.com/Tools-Crimping.shtml
(first one, $8.90)

Ok, they are cheap and not spring loaded, but I'm not crimping pins every day so they should be enough.

PS: Some people are going to say "STAY OUT OF FUTURLEC" because of their reputation. But I didn't have any issue with my previous order.
You just have to be patient since it's shipped from Thailand.

eh it doesnt really matter as long as it does the gauge of wire you have. Another nice feature is the ratcheting action.

I have one of the ones listed above from Futurlec, basic but does the job for a wide range of wire gauges . I got it on ebay though. I think it was from the US and they shipped to Ireland so he would probably ship worldwide.

Might have been this guy  ???

It matters if you get a crimper that can't crimp the kind of pins you need to crimp. For example I've got one of those cheap crimpers used for sleeved/insulated terminals, works OK for those but it's impossible to use for crimping the squareish pins used for the crimp housing. Looking at the crimpers on Farnel, what's a "Ferule"? Apparently crimpers are for BNC-type connector, RJ-type connectors or "Ferule" connectors. Searching for ferules on the Farnel site they seem to be some tubular insulated kind of connectors, nothing like the pins for crimp housing.

In fact the page chelmi linked shows 9 crimpers but I'd say only the first two are good for the pins we use.

I'm not crimping pins every day either. Searching by name I found that crimping tool at a web shop here in Romania, so I'll just get it from there. For reference the pliers I used for my crimping are more expensive then this crimping tool :D I'm still open to Farnel alternatives those, because shipping from Farnell is actually cheaper for me, even those Farnell is in UK and I'm in Romania.

I ordered the cheap crimper. If it doesn't work at least I didn't loose a lot of money :)
