To all people who want to make AVR programmers.

I have recently found a bunch of old IDE HDD connectors and realized that, "Hey, I can use these as cables for the programmer, 10 pin and 6 pin!!!".

So just so you know... if you are looking for an apropriate connector, you can use these. (I know almost everyone has them) Just cut them down with a small hack saw (go very slowly so you dont start to melt through the plastic) or a hot knife, so pretty much anything you want to use to cut them would probably work.

I found it useful to use a pair of pliers to remove the pins inside the header before cutting it (though this was just with female header, not sure how it will work with old IDE cables [they look like they use more-or-less the same structure])

I use to detach these cables with a stanley-knife and heatup the cable on the connector with a lighter (not burn !), just make the isolation soft and they will come off nice and easy.

These are the same class of connector. Insulation-displacement ribbon connectors, dual-row one-tenth-inch on center. Hard drives and floppy drives used them.

Some old PCs had 10pin connectors like this inside for serial port connections. If you find a couple of those cables, then two of them together would make a 10-pin AVR programmer cable.

Actually I have one of those connectors, and that's 9 pin.

This: 9 pin serial connector on one end, 10 pin insulation displacement connector on the other. The 10 pin IDC is one of the two AVR ISP cable options.
