Hi, just thought about a RFID module for the OSCAR, i know that no one is building it but if someone could (NOT ME) it would be a really important module because RFIDs possibilities are endless for robots, hope to see someone build it soon!

How are u supposed to use an RFID with a robot.....
RFIDs are useful for other things like personnel access, super market product reference.... and other things....

I can not really see any use in robotics...

And hey..... If you want to build one you are supposed to know of physics, behavior of electromagnetic waves and such....
You see the tag is passive, the reader emits a electromagnetic field charging the tag's internal capacitor, then
the tag, shorts it's coil in a serial communication method, the shorting of coil is like a mechanical wave hitting a wall...
The wave is reflected, and read by the reader.... So you get the rest....

It's a nice concept, still a little hard to materialize if you know little, like how to make an antenna and such....

When a robot passes a door it can do the following flow:

RFID Receiver activated? --- Yes
                           |     |         \
                           |  --- No    Check to see which tag the door RFID is? --- Continues depending on what tag # it is

As you can see the robot carries the active part of the RFID system and the doors have the passive tags which have different signals depending on the door, this way a robot automatically knows what room it's in at all times.
But you ask why this is useful?
A butler robot needs to get a beer from the fridge (or whatever it needs to do) and to do that it needs to go to the room the beer storage is (or wherever it needs to go) so if you have RFID tags on the door + a map of the rooms in the location it will be able to find a route through the location it is deployed in easily.

This is one example of why you would want to use RFID tags in robots.

All objects in the house may have passive RFID tags (hidden) on them. This way you don't need too much vision recognition to identify what is what. Of course, it works at a very short range. When the robot needs to triangulate it's position by known landmarks, will have to use vision, range finders and a compass.

Have you guys seen the AVR RFID tag that uses only the AVR chip and an inductor? Not even power connections. Awesome piece of engineering.

I could see it being used for a security mechanism... The guys on prototype this used it as an identifier for firefigher when the would get in range of each other so they could identify them....
