I found a website that has a bunch of good examples for making an Irobot do various things using Labview and a Luminary ARM microcontroller.
http://decibel.ni.com/content/...oject?view=documents
There are examples for how to make the Irobot move, connect it to sensors like rangefinders
http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-6421
and compasses
http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-6605
and get started programming it.
The directions are all pretty simple and clear; it's a good spot to start.
